Data Centre Cooling, Now and Then

The data centre cooling market is bustling with activity.

The reason for all this activity is simple: data centres produce a tremendous amount of hot air. Computer servers and other equipment contained within data centres generate a lot of heat. Citing liquid-immersion cooling solutions, the need to reduce the OPEX of data centres, and more as drivers, RNR Market Research expects the major players in the data centre cooling industry to grow noticeably through 2019.

Cold aisle or hot aisle containment are amongst the strategies that many companies are using to increase capacity whilst also maintaining a controlled environment. Containment solutions, both hot and cold, seek to create an environment in which hot and cold air can be circulated more efficiently, allowing for higher power density whilst mitigating excess heat. Regardless of the exact configuration, the key here is that much more thought is being put into how data centres should be organized, down to the rack and server level, all in an effort to balance efficiency and cooling.

Data Centre Infrastructure Monitoring and Management (DCIM) software is another key addition that is likely to impact the future of data centre cooling. Running a data centre is complex, and a functioning DCIM, more like a collection of tools than a single tool, helps data centre managers track assets and utilization, and also energy usage and cooling. Next-generation DCIMs streamline the data centre management process, again in a move to optimise efficiency, cooling, energy consumption, and more.
