Opening that first out-of-market or out-of-country Point of Presence (POP) is always a big step for a carrier to take. But having worked with hundreds of telecommunications carriers on doing exactly this, I’d like to share some insight on what to look for in a colocation provider while growing your service provider business.
Here are 3 key factors for evaluating a colocation provider on their ability to help you grow:
Location, location, location.
In the carrier business, high performance connectivity is king. Make sure you choose the right location for your business. If the location you’re looking at doesn’t provide the opportunities you need to take that natural next step in the evolution of your company, look elsewhere.
Having the underlying infrastructure and necessary redundancy might seem like a no-brainer in this business, but it is something that is often overlooked. Make sure you work with a partner with a strong history of uptime and 24/7 support, and more importantly, someone who supports that uptime history with a 100% SLA. Do not accept anything less.
Future growth opportunities.
Look to the future. A location might have the three or four other carrier partners you’re using today for NNIs or direct peering, but will that location support future growth for your company? Is there a long list of other providers and customers with whom you can do future business? What about cloud providers? As a service provider, there’s a good chance that you’re not even considering a cloud option on your network at this point in your journey. Even so, look for a location that will enable future growth, not inhibit it.
Finally, you must choose a partner you can trust—a partner who has the people and processes in place to be there for your business. Remember: there is no price on peace of mind. Choose a partner who has a mutual benefit in helping your business grow, like Telx does with our online MarketplacePORTAL and our in-person MarketplaceLIVE events.
Evaluating a potential partner in the process of positioning your business for growth involves many factors, but the most important are location, growth opportunities, and trust. As someone who has personally helped many carriers go through this exact same process, I can say with certainty that you’d have a hard time going wrong if you prioritize these three factors here.
